Both images are misleading and unhelpful. What is plausible by 2030 is not tyrannical artificial will but a set of layered, delegated decision systems that push decision tempo, compress information, and reconfigure human responsibility at scale. These systems will look like command assistants that sometimes act with delegated authority rather than like independent sovereign commanders.
Institutional momentum already points in this direction. The U.S. Department of Defense has invested in organisational structures and strategies to accelerate enterprise AI adoption and to create the plumbing for joint AI-enabled decision systems. In practice this creates an environment where automated decision aids and autonomy scaffolding are scaled across platforms and services, precisely the infrastructure that would allow algorithmic C2 augmentation to proliferate.
Practical combat experience of the last three years has also driven demand. The mature deployment of AI-assisted command must therefore include attribution mechanisms, audit trails, and doctrinal thresholds that bind commanders, lawyers and engineers together. Operational doctrine and training will need to change. Human commanders in 2030 must learn to shepherd machine advice, to recognise model brittleness, and to calibrate trust dynamically. This is a new cognitive skill set equal in importance to existing tactical competencies. Organisations will also need institutional testbeds where machine-in-command behaviours can be red teamed, stressed and certified before being entrusted with live operations.
Finally, there is a strategic psychology to consider. Absent that work we risk delivering speed without judgment, and that will make the battlefield more dangerous in ways that neither technologists nor ethicists want to see.
