DARPA has been running some of the most visible experiments that will shape how autonomy shows up at the tactical edge. The public record through early 2023 shows deliberate progress across four areas that matter to soldiers on the ground and the crews who support them: squad-level integration and autonomy, large-scale swarms for urban missions, autonomy for aircraft, and long-endurance maritime autonomy. Each program is demonstrating capability while also exposing practical limits.
What happened, briefly, and why you should care
Squad-level systems: DARPA’s Squad X and Squad X Core Technologies efforts are expressly aimed at building light, integrated autonomy and sensing that dismounted squads can carry and control. The goal is not replacement of the human squad leader but augmentation of situational awareness, targeting, and sensing in GPS-denied or cluttered environments. That work matters because it is the closest to immediate tactical use for infantry units.
Swarm experiments: The OFFSET program ran repeated field experiments that matured human-swarm teaming concepts and swarm tactics. In late 2021 DARPA showcased combined operations using hundreds of small air and ground platforms, immersive interfaces, and tactics exchanges intended to let operators mix and match behaviors for complex urban missions. Swarms promise massed sensing, screening, and effects, but they also multiply points of failure and create new coordination and deconfliction problems.
Aircraft autonomy: The ALIAS program demonstrated that high-level, retrofittable autonomy can be installed in legacy aircraft. A notable milestone was a UH-60A Black Hawk retrofitted with autonomy technology that flew uninhabited in flight tests in early 2022. That shows we are not decades away from optionally piloted or remotely supervised rotary-wing operations. But the real work after demonstrations is certification, resilient interfaces, and safe fallback modes.
Maritime autonomy: DARPA’s ACTUV effort produced the Sea Hunter prototype, which moved into open-water testing and was transition-minded toward naval use. Sea Hunter demonstrated long-endurance, compliant navigation, and mission modularity that matter for persistent surveillance and tracking tasks. Those at-sea autonomy lessons translate to logistics, rules of navigation, and human-supervisory burden.
What the experiments actually prove versus what they do not
Proves: autonomy stacks can operate in constrained scenarios, teams can win competitions and demos when the environment and success metrics are defined, and human-swarm interfaces can let operators direct large numbers of agents at a tactical level. Examples include multi-robot exploration wins in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge and the OFFSET field experiments that integrated virtual and physical agents.
Does not prove: reliable, fully autonomous decision making in long-duration, open, adversarial conditions. Demonstrations tend to use known mission envelopes, safety infrastructure, and well-instrumented testbeds. Sim-to-real gaps, adversary electronic attack, degraded sensors, and unanticipated mission failure modes remain hard problems. Recent conference and challenge write-ups show the autonomy community working around perception limits, traversability risk, and communications fragility rather than having solved them.
Concrete things soldiers and small-unit leaders need to know

Expect option, not replacement. Early fielded autonomy will be optionally piloted, supervised, or serve as a sensor/actuator extension of the squad rather than an independent combatant. That is the intended transition path in Squad X and ALIAS work.

Train for degraded comms. Autonomy demos often assume periodic supervision or predictable comms windows. In a contested environment networks will be intermittent. Practice operations with radio-denied or delayed-control modes and rehearse fail-safe behaviors. Evidence from subterranean and off-road autonomy work shows systems must manage limited connectivity and still make safe local choices.

Keep interfaces simple and rehearsed. OFFSET experiments emphasized immersive and gesture interfaces, but simplicity wins under stress. Operators must be drilled on what autonomy will and will not do, how to command tactics, and how to override or recover systems.

Inspect logistics and maintenance overhead. Swarms and robotic fleets look cheap until you account for launch, recovery, battery swaps, payload calibration, and spare parts. The physical testbeds used in OFFSET and SubT required significant support to sustain runs. Plan maintenance cycles and spares before deployment.

Verify rules of engagement and delegation of lethal decisions. DARPA demonstrations focus on autonomy for sensing, movement, and non-kinetic effects or supervised engagement. Any operational plan that contemplates autonomous use of lethal force must have clear legal review, command responsibility, and human-in-the-loop safeguards. The public programs emphasize supervision and augmentation rather than autonomous lethal decision making.

Expect brittleness at the edge. Papers and competition reports from DARPA SubT teams document the enormous attention paid to foothold selection, risk-aware planning, and recovery behaviors. That is an admission that off-road and subterranean autonomy still fails in surprising ways and needs human attention.
Immediate checklist for units that will train with DARPA-derived autonomy
1) Require a short, standardized interface primer for every new system. If your soldier cannot describe in one minute how to get manual control, stop the exercise. 2) Run comms-denied drills. Force the autonomy to operate without constant uplink and practice human takeover. 3) Tag maintenance and spare part owners. Swarms consume time and batteries. Someone must own recovery timelines. 4) Practice escalation of authority. Test who authorizes kill-chain transitions and how logs are captured for after-action review. 5) Keep experiment officers in the loop. Treat early autonomy like a prototype; assign observers who track failure modes and report back for software/hardware fixes.
Bottom line and a caution
DARPA experiments are reducing the time between lab demonstration and field utility. The near-term reality will be systems that extend human perception and reach, not independent, omniscient machines. The demos are impressive and useful, but they also expose new burdens: maintenance, training, comms planning, and legal and command questions. Soldiers who approach autonomy as another tool to be understood, rehearsed, and owned will get operational value from it; units that treat autonomy as a magic black box will discover the cost of overtrust in hard ways. The right attitude is skeptical curiosity: test, quantify failure modes, and bake the recovery procedures into doctrine.
